They Never Tell You THIS About Change

So, I’m not sure what is going on lately, but the Universe keeps tapping on my shoulder to derail my plans. Can you relate?

I’m a planner, like a BIG TIME planner.

I always think through everything and honestly could give Jennifer Lopez in The Wedding Planner a run for her money. I always show up ready to go and ready for any twist or turn.  My friends and coworkers also expect that (I’m often called the “camp mom” or the “den mom”.....#plannersgonnaplan). But lately I’ve been practicing more flexibility in my daily life and trying not to be too tied to what I PLANNED on doing.

Guess what?  It’s weird (not gonna lie), but I’m starting to get the hang of it.

Example: This past week at the beach, it was cloudy and rainy the whole week.  J. Lo Bri would have had a really hard time working past the fact that Mother Earth did not work according to my vacation plan (yeah, when you say that out loud it sound ridiculous). Flexible Bri, put on her sweatpants and a long sleeved shirt and still sat at the beach every.single.day plowing through 5 cheesy AF books.  Because of that flexibility, it was a GREAT vacation.  I slept and read...the two things I wanted to achieve.

In this experiment to be more flexible, I’ve had a discovery.

Although I’M getting the hang of it, everyone else around me isn’t. I’m met with “what’s wrong” or “this isn’t like you” ....and those comments have actually started to creep into my head. So much so, I’ve said out loud, “I’m such a dingbat!”

What?

Um…no.  You do you Boo.

When you make a change in your life, one of the hardest parts will be navigating through those around you that aren’t okay with YOUR change.

Here’s the thing about change:  It’s hard.

Some people thrive in it and others struggle through it, but it is still hard.  And if you ever hear someone say, “I don’t understand” in reference to a change, what they are really saying is, “I don’t like it.” And that’s okay.  They don’t have to like it, YOU do.

You cannot control their expectations, you can only live YOUR best life the best way YOU know how.

Got it?

I hope you are having a kickass Monday.  I’m sticking to the flexibility train for a bit longer even if it is freaking out everyone around me. They think that my brain is scrambled when really, I’m just creating the perfect omelette.
